You could argue that this is an attempt at being "edgy," but in a season that's so clearly inspired by real-life current events, it often just comes off as exhausting. Maybe the pressure of creating the messiah baby is causing your impotence." It all falls apart from there, with Winter running away as she says, "I feel like I'm being raped." This whole scene very concisely illustrated Cult's biggest problem so far - the show plays for laughs in places it shouldn't, then falls flat in the places where humor would make sense. He's not attracted to women and tells Kai as much, but of course Kai isn't having it. When Kai shows up, he puts on "I Swear" by All-4-One, proclaiming, "From this day forward, it should be played whenever a messiah is conceived." Unfortunately for the future messiah, the ceremony doesn't go as planned because of the whole "Samuels is gay" situation. "I can't believe I was at the women's march three months ago," says Winter, waiting for Kai to arrive and start the messiah-creating process. This isn't even the 10th craziest thing Kai's done this season so we'll let it slide. According to Kai, this will complete the circle and still make it an Anderson-only baby. To avoid having sex with his sister, Kai decides that Winter will have sex with Detective Samuels while Kai anally penetrates Samuels. But no, dear reader - apparently Kai draws the line at incest.
Kai pitches Winter the idea of "creating a messiah" using their shared Anderson DNA, which caused Winter and probably most of the audience to assume Kai was suggesting they go full Jaime and Cersei Lannister. Naturally, this isn't what Winter does at all.
Beverly is most upset about this given her previous status as Kai's second-in-command, so she gives Winter an ultimatum: Get your brother under control or I'll do it for you. What happened in this episode, you ask? Or more accurately, what didn't happen?Īfter Bebe Babbitt got the lady cult members fired up about the way Kai's been treating them.they did absolutely nothing about it and now they're all working as kitchen grunts in the Butchery, feeding Kai's personal army of creepy white dudes.
After Tuesday's episode, "Winter of Our Discontent," I have learned to never doubt Ryan Murphy again. Between Lena Dunham showing up as Valerie Solanas and Kai convincing his clowns to nail-gun a man to death, I thought American Horror Story: Cult had probably run out of ways to shock me.
